Resume for the Unappreciated
Forecasts the weather by looking at the sky.
Knows the best time to plant corn.
Mends a hole in the fence with nothing but ingenuity.
Can fix a thousand things with baling wire.
Milks cows twice a day for hundreds of days without losing sanity.
Diagnoses animal ailments like a vet, only without the schooling.
Wrings the last cent out of a dollar, to keep going.
Works in all kinds of weather.
Caretaker of acres and acres of land.
Feeds nations.

ART TEACHER - FIRST DAY
Nervous? Yes.
April 26th, 2008 at 11:54 pmI look again at the day’s schedule.
Grades K through 6.
My art room door opens,
And in troops the first class.
My mind goes blank.
All of the college courses,
all the ed psych classes, and ones in
administration and
classroom management,
all the theory and
pedagogical practice
disappear in a cloud of
frightening reality.
Faced with a room full of
unpredictable kindergartners,
(and trying to be non-threatening)
I inform them in a cordial tone that if anyone
wants to know something at any time
To just please raise a hand.
One little fellow responds immediately.
I smile at him and say “Yes?”
He asks in a clear, loud voice,
“Why is your head so big?”
Jerry,
You’ve become like my morning cup of coffee–a great way to start the day. Whatever will I do when the poetry prompts stop, and I won’t have my Jerry-fix? Guess I’ll just have to get by with Thursday nights.
