April 1st poems

The first prompt: write a poem about a first or a series of firsts. This first could be a first love, first job, first funeral, first marriage, first divorce, first child, first Wal-Mart shopping experience, etc. You could also flip this around to be a poem about beginnings (after all, the beginning of anything is also a first step in a process).

Disengaged

I called it being disengaged.
And I was
Stunned
At being dumped.

I’d had a future,
Then I didn’t.
Because
He’d changed his mind.

He was confused,
He said.
Yeah,
Me too.

So, I drove
In a daze
To
Nowhere.

It was early.
No traffic.
Except,
In the road

There was a body
Of a cat.
Dead.
Just hit.

I pulled over,
Got a towel,
Picked
It up.

I’d found my own cats,
Too often
Squished
Beyond recognition.

Someone had loved
This one,
Too.
They would find him

In one piece.
Like my heart
Is
Today.

Life in Rewind

I witnessed your first stirrings,
first ultra-sound snapshot.
Your first cry, not sad or melancholic,
but bold–my first sign of what was to come.

Then came a mad-dash progression of firsts:
first tooth
first steps
first words
school–first separation from me.

I documented your many firsts,
scaped knees, bruised heart, first love,
and I will sit front row for many more.

One thing I know for sure, Sweet Child,
Life in rewind is no less
startling the second time.
