April 18th poems

Today’s prompt is to take a line of my choosing and incorporate it into your poem in some way. You can use the line as the title of your poem, as the last line, as the first line, or even drop it somewhere in the middle–but you must use the line somewhere. And a special note to you “rule benders”: No, you cannot break up the line into individual words or phrases. The whole line must be used, though you can definitely insert a linebreak or two if you wish.

So, what’s the line anyway? It is: There is no connection.

No connection to what? And who is speaking? And in what context? These are questions you should ponder before tackling this prompt.

If the Sky Were Green

If the sky were green
and grass blue
could I love you more?
Or would comparing
your eyes
to the lawn after a storm
change things?
There is no connection.

–Candace

Too Late

He keeps telling himself
there is no connection
between words that bruise
and how he feels about her

He wants to believe
these moments are rare
fashioned by fires
burning out of control

He would like to think
that any burning
is better than dying embers

Can a bird really rise from ashes?

    THE AFTERMATH

    There is no connection.
    There never was a connection.
There never will be a connection.
    Does someone demand it?
    Does something require it?
    No.
    Why?
    A meaningful connection
    Exists only when two entities
    Agree to a bond
    Benefitting both.
    There is no agreement.
    There is no connection.
    There never was a connection.
There never will be a connection.
    Amen.
