April 13th poems

Write a poem based off your response to a song. You get to pick the song, but I ask that you please indicate which song sparked the poem. You can do this by quoting a line or two from the song between the title and poem–as I’ve done a few times this month; or you can just put the song title and artist in parentheses after the poem.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

“Peace Chant”
–Layne Redmond

Peace Peace Peace
Undulating through me
Like a snake in the grass
And grass in the wind
Like wind through branches
And branch beneath bird
Like bird fleeing cat
And cat stalking mole
Like mole burrowing dirt
And dirt opening to rain
Like rain down horse tail
And horse tail swatting bees
Like bees swaying ’round flowers
And flowers in the breeze
Like a breeze in my hair
And my hair when I dance
Like dancing with me?

    Jerry Says:

    AMAZING GRACE

    A beautiful anthem of hope
    Of promise,
    Of comfort.
Reaching deeply into the human heart,
    It brings tears
    Of joy,
    Of solace.
    Of gratitude.
    Performed in country churches,
    In regal urban cathedrals,
    In concert halls,
    At funerals.
    The bagpipers,
    The soloists,
    Leontyne Price, and
    Judy Collins,
    Whose magnificent performances
    Bring its message to life.
    Why?
    How?

Its power heals the human soul.
