April 12th poems

Prompt: Write an apology poem. You can apologize for ending a relationship, breaking a chair, or maybe you can even apologize for not being apologetic.

Sorry

I’m sorry for being so stingy.
Not with things, but with me.
And not just for holding back
but for expecting generosity from you.
I took and I took.
And I made you feel stupid
for feeling hurt by me.
It made me feel better–
in control and superior
to you and everyone else.
Now I know we are all the same
and there there is nothing
to control
except ourselves.

The Moment

The Moment comes to me at the worst times.
Like when I take inventory of failures.
Compare myself with the June Cleavers of the world.

When you bring it up in polite company.

If I could only go back to that Moment.
Scrub it away with strong cleaner.
Cover it was a fresh coat of paint.

Pretend it never happened.

But it’s forever there between us.
This horrible Moment when I hurt you.
A thousand apologies will never be enough.
but I will say it anyway.

I am sorry.

    APOLOGIA

    I apologize.
    Oh, yes!
    I apologize.
I apologize to everyone and everything.
I’ve read the Ten Commandments many times
And tried to determine if there are any
I don’t have to apologize for.
My life has been the occasion for
    one apology after another.
    I apologize for being stupid.
I apologize for not thinking things through.
    I apologize for being stubborn.
I apologize for not utilizing all the gifts
    God has granted to me.
I apologize for all the hurt I have caused others.
    I apologize for jobs undone.
Oh, hell, I apologize for everything!
    Let’s get on with it.
